Erysichthon
This Greek myth is from the Metamorphoses by Ovid published in 8 CE. I chose it as a Halloween story for adults. Like the best folk tales, it is relevant for us today as well as entertaining. Bloody Mary
I think this is one of my favorite ghost stories to tell. I hear laughter in the video, but I think it must be nervous laughter. I saw a couple of people in the audience cringing during the story and afterwards, someone told me they got goose bumps. This one always scared the hooey out of my students at LIS, but they also begged for it again and again. This was also a good exercise. I usually take 10-13 minutes to tell this story and AfterWork Story only allows 7 minutes, so I had to strip this one down to basics. Interestingly, it meant adding a thing or two at the same time. For a school sleepover, though, some of the "padding" did up the creepiness of it. I found the story on Americanfolklore.net, retold by S.E. Schlosser. Granddaddy Jack and the Speedy Chicken
An old joke I turned into a story about my Granddaddy Jack. |

The Black Prince (Egyptian)
This is a story that sat in my heart and mind for a long time before I ever told it. It does not have a happy ending, but it does have a powerful and strong ending. |
