Was ist ein Schulberatungspsychologe? |
A school counselor is a school-based mental health professional who has at least a master’s degree in school counseling, meets state certification/licensure standards and abides by the laws of the state in which they are employed.
School counselors work to address the developmental needs of all students through a comprehensive school counseling program focussing on the academics, personal/social development and career exploration all students. They do this by providing both direct and indirect services. Direct services include providing individual and group counseling designed to meet students’ immediate needs or a crisis response. Such counseling is often therapeutic in nature and responsive, addressing concerns regarding personal, emotional, peer or family problems that interfere with the student’s school performance. School counselors also provide preventive and developmental counseling, designed for personal and social growth and building life skills, through group counseling and classroom guidance lessons. Indirect services include providing consultation and collaboration with parents, teachers, school administrators, and community organizations as well as referrals to outside agencies for additional assistance as needed. School counselors are required to renew their license every three to five years. This timeline depends on the requirements of the state in which they are employed. In order to renew licensure, continuing education classes or professional development courses are generally necessary. School counselors are not the same as school psychologists. School psychologists work primarily with students who have special needs while school counselors work all students in order to foster success. |
