World Storytelling Day - March 20, 2021
A few of us are going to tell stories in the woods near my house, weather permitting. If the weather turns bad, we will go online. Obviously we are hoping for beautiful weather. There is a lovely spot that is perfect for a bit of storytelling in the afternoon. There is no official advertising, just word of mouth.

It was my honor to tell stories to the high school students of Bridge to Success Academy back in my hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. Their literacy coach is a good friend of mine. This is the kind of school I would love to work in as a school counselor.
It was my first Zoom performance and it went very well. I hear they really liked it.

November, 2020
After a very long Corona pause, with delayed and postponed gigs, I had the very great pleasure to meet Bärbel Jogshies, a storyteller from Hannover. We began meet regularly and have a lot of great story talk. Bärbel was able to make the kind of connections that my poor German language doesn't let me. She was able to find another storyteller here that my 4 years of searching didn't turn up. We were able to get a small group going: Erzählkunst in Freising. We had our first performance Just a few nights ago on October 29. We even got a bit of press. I told "Bloody Mary" and "Erysichthon."
It's all a bit up in the air right now; our November performance is cancelled by lockdown. We're looking forward to our December performance.

IV International Seminar on Fairytale and Storytelling Therapy, Sintra, Portugal.
March 20-26, 2018. I will be presenting a case study on a counseling group, "Running Away with Hansel & Gretel" at this conference. I was there two years ago presenting a workshop on using folktales to teach character education that was very well received.
Although the emphasis is on mental health and therapy, there is presentation on exceptional education that I am looking forward to hearing even though I am no longer in the schools and involved with the RtI/Child Study/various sorts of placement teams.
You can read more about the conference here.

February 8-9, 2018. I will tell scary stories to the 10th graders so they have a bit of a break just before their major exams. As their VP pointed out, in addition to a mini 45 minute break, this also will painlessly reinforce their English listening skills just in time for their English exams.

December 18-19, 2017.
I had a wonderful time telling stories to the 7th grade classes here. Since Christmas is a traditional time for telling scary stories (being the darkest times of the year when people gather together, I told scary stories that take place in the winter time. The kids did beautifully understanding the stories. I was very impressed with their language skills and very much enjoyed being among this age group again.

AfterWork Story
October 5, 2017, Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen
I planned to tell Erysichthon, but when I drew the lot for the final story, I realized that this story from The Metamorphosis by Ovid was a bit too intense for the final story of the night, so having promised a scary story, I told "Long Red Fingernails, Big Red Lips" instead.

Mittwoch 12. Juli 2017 – 19 Uhr, Heppel & Ettlich Theatre
If you think stories are only for kids, think again! I'm telling a ghost story that kept my students (the older high school students!) creeped out for days afterwards and asking to hear it again and again.

Burda Grant
I've been working on a grant from Burda that would allow Kindergartens to provide arts for their students. I worked in collaboration with Mayra Franco, a photographer and art teacher who has been teaching art classes at Little Daisies. We proposed art lessons based on folktales told by a storyteller and included a sample lesson. Our brief introduction included research on the importance arts in early education and the benefits of applied storytelling in educational settings. Our lesson plan listed cross curricular standards, including language arts, math, science, and personal & social skills, as well as arts standards. The finished product included brief bios of the arts team (Mayra and me) and the Little Daisies team. It was a very polished and professional looking proposal. Even better, they allowed us to turn it in in English, so the Little Daisies folks didn't have to translate it into German!
We are hoping to hear soon. Fingers crossed!
UPDATE: Sadly, we didn't get the grant. We're not letting that stop us, though. We are still looking at ways of combining stories and art projects for mommies and their young ones in Munich.

May 23 I am becoming something of a regular here! It was gratifying to learn that when the children were told during morning circle time that I was coming, they cheered! Wow! I went in with a planned set of 20-30 minutes, knowing that 3-5 year olds have a limited attention span, but at the end of each story, those little guys chanted, "another story! Another story!" I got the nod from their teachers and told another. At 45 minutes. the teachers and I called a halt, in amazement that kids this young sat so still and attentive so long. I've seen this before with 5 year old American kindergartners, but some of these kids were a good bit younger! Very impressive.

Book Week at Leipzig International School, 2017
April 3-4 was honored to be invited to kick off Book Week for the LIS Primary School this year. My story theme was American folktales that developed from German Märchen. I told stories in the Primary assembly on Monday and also to grade level groups for grades 1, 2 and 3. I provided workshops for grades 4 and 5. Grade 4's workshop was "From Text to Performance," showing how a storytelling takes a story from words on a page to a performance. This was very well received by the teachers, as well as the students. The Grade 5 workshop was "Fractured Fairy-tales" which took students through the process of creating their own fractured fairytale.

Little Daisies
March 2 Back to Little Daisies, telling more stories to the young ones. I am surprised to find that I like telling to these little ones. It is also forcing me to stretch my skills and my repertoire, since I usually tell to much older kids and adults.

March 21 I have had the opportunity to be the international teller at Dresden's World Storytelling Day event for the last couple of years. I will be there again this year, telling tales of Clever Girls in line with this year's theme of Strong Women. This year I am adding a special feature: bilingual telling!
